Online Holiday Shopping Tips

With the holidays fast approaching, Christmas shopping is on the minds of everyone. It’s great if you can support your local merchants, but some gifts are easier to find and purchase online. I love online shopping! You have an increased selection, lower prices, convenience, and you can shop in your pajamas. There are, however, a few concerns some people have with shopping online.

The first is being asked to ‘create a profile’ or ‘register’ before you’re able to pay for items. This seems like an unnecessary step, but it’s often quite simple and can save you time in the future. Once your account is created, all your information is saved for future purchases. Some merchants send regular emails offering coupon codes and various discounts; this is another advantage of registering your profile.

Another concern for online shoppers is landing on a poorly designed website. Let’s say you find exactly what you’ve been searching for online, but the website looks a little primitive. Before handing over your personal and credit information, you want to know this merchant is legitimate. On these, and all other, websites, look for the SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate. This certificate means the merchant has taken the appropriate steps to keep your personal information safe, while also ensuring a secure transaction. You can also visit the Better Business Bureau’s website (bbb.org) and find out if they are an accredited business.

Lastly, some online shoppers get frustrated when they can’t immediately find what they need. If this happens, try using different search engines such as Yahoo, Google, Bing and Ask.com. More than likely, you will get different results from each search engine and have a higher chance of finding your item.

If you ever have a question or concern while online, try asking a friend or relative for advice. Here’s a little hint, before making a purchase online, try searching for coupon codes. Go to your favorite search engine and type ‘coupon code + your favorite merchant here.’ Merchants and consumers often post discounts for items, especially during the holidays. Now, sit back and enjoy the comfort of doing your holiday shopping online in the comfort of your own home.
