Do you know how to hashtag?

Jessica Brannen / August 18, 2016

Hashtags dominate the online world, but do people know the correct way to use them? In social media, the almighty hashtag can range from being succinctly informative to humorously absurd. Hashtags are diverse and creating them requires a good deal of imagination. They have many purposes, but are especially helpful, if not essential, to promoting your brand. Hashtags are important because they:

  • Categorize posts
  • Build community
  • Help monitor trends
  • Track performance of promotions

Generally, hashtags should:

  • Be influenced by fans and followers, and/or the brand name itself
  • Be unambiguous in appearance (remember, capitalization is important) and message
  • Encourage a call-to-action that’s both attractive and easy
  • Be used in traditional as well as online media
  • Be posted live during major events

Check out the infographic below to see how proper hashtag use can elevate user engagement on sites such as:

  • Twitter: always use 1-2 hashtags
  • Instagram: always use several hashtags
  • Facebook: use hashtags rarely or never
